The WifeS Lament

THE WIFE´S LAMENT

It is an elegy included in the Exeter Book. It expresses the spiritings of a woman who is complaining about the absence of her man. It´s a secular poesy alone it has also religious specter and connotations (spirituality). As we have seen befote, Anglo-Saxon poetry is a poetry of lament and suffering and we can see it reflected in the poem because she dialog once and again about hardships. It is a sorry poem, she feels lonely, vulnerable because she does not have a lord. We find a lot of dark and sad elements throughout the poem.
The plot of the poem centres in the lament of a woman whose husband has through with(p) something and the punishment has been exile. Now she´s living alone as we can see in lines 36-38:
So in this wood grove they made me dwell,
Under the oak-tree, in this earthy barrow.
middle-aged is this earth-cave, all I do is yearn.
She mentions the sea, a symbol of hazard that is a current theme in Anglo-Saxon period. on that point´s also an opposition between the sea ( danger and wilderness) and the land (security and protection) as we could see in The Seafearer . The city carriage is seen as a symbol of order and peace whereas the set relates to darkness and disorder.
Family is described as a feudal body where the father is the lord and his system is mantained from father to son.

Sisters and doughters are seen as possessions of the lord. This woman feels like a posesión of her husban´s family, as he has gone, She has to accept that she has been banished because of her husband. So when she mention my lord we cannot severalize that it´s referred to religión. It´s not the lord as God, but these people who is superior and care about her. She must feel guilty because of her husband´s crime.
In line 30, she talks about the oak-tree as a mysterious and symbolic vex related to her isolation and sadness. She lives in a cave or other natural shelter and this is the cause of her sorrow.
