Now, how they handle these problems and situations helps determine what merciful of person they are. There are some characters that handle their problems hearty and are usually good, fitting characters, but there are also some that get int do a good job at dealing with these situations and end up being rude and selfish. Some of these not-so-good characters include Dw ayne, the father of Victorias baby, and Russell Beckman, a student in Toms history class. Throughout the abounding novel, Dwayne and Russell Beckman are depicted as despicable characters who have no redeeming qualities. Haruf characterizes Dwayne as an unloving person who can be controlling and even violently forceful at times.
