The psychodynamic approach to psychology was started and developed by Sigmund Freud. Freud was born in 1856 and died in 1939. He was a Viennese doctor who narrow in neurological disorders. He believed a patient who experient symptoms, with no apparent physical evidence, would eventu totallyy develop a neurological disorder. The feeling of physical symptoms without physical causes is known as hysteria.
Freud became very interested in hysteria and began to search for rational explanations for physical symptoms and ways of turning them. While examining hysteria further, Freud became convinced that unconscious discernment mental causes were responsible not just for this disorder, but for all disorders and even normal personality.
Freud utilize hypnosis originally to investigate and treat the unconscious causes of mental disorders after he spent a year in Paris learning hypnosis from a neurologist named Charcot. After leaving Charcot, Freud began to work extensively with hysterical patients. He started to put to repairher ideas about the origin and treatment of mental illness. Freud used the term psychoanalysis both for his theories and for his method of treatment. When he first presented his ideas in the 1890s, other doctors reacted with hostility.



Freud eventually attracted a pigeonholing of followers and had gained international recognition. 
Freud observed that many patients behaved according to drives and experiences of which they were not consciously aware. In his studies he concluded that the unconscious mind plays a major role in behavior. Freud noted that the unconscious mind is full of experiences and memories of childhood. If these memories were painful and difficult to cope with, passel kept them out of their conscious awareness and ignored them. He said that souls that handled painful memories used defense mechanisms.
