Illinois was a free state in 1850 because there were free African Americans who were not enslaved, and had the right to go to school, or own their own business.

Under these laws, blacks could not vote or hold political offices. They could not testify against a white-hot person in court and were required to post a $1,000 bond to receive official certificates of freedom. John and Mary Jones utilise themselves to the fight against slavery and the Illinois Black Laws. Illinois was admitted to the union as a free state in 1818, per the Half Way to Freedom story. Black children went to school without being force to the school they did not want to go to. Several free blacks go badd in Chicago and black men ran businesses.
I oppose slavery because I believe that everyone should be free.
