The fascist authorities threatened them with dismissal from their jobs and in their consternation then closed all schools for a month. Teachers held classes in private homes. Despite censorship, news of the teachers resistance spread. In early March, tens of thousands of letters of protest from parents poured into the government office. The news of the parents resistance reached almost every home in the country. After the teachers defiance, almost 1,000 male teachers were arrested and direct to jails and concentration camps. The schools reopened, and the teachers still at liberty were pressured to submit and accept the fascist teachers organization.

However, many teachers refused membership; rumors were spread that these teachers would be arrested and killed. so 499 of the teachers were shipped on cattle car trains to the old capital of Trondheim. From Trondheim the teachers were shipped in terrible conditions in overcrowded steamships on a 13-day dangerous journey far beyond the Arctic Circle. Within three days, the teachers were transferred from the supremacy of Gestapo to that of the regular German army.
